Planning for Community Disasters

Find out from your local officials about the community’s disaster/emergency plans by asking these questions:
  • What is the most likely hazard?
  • How will I be alerted?
  • Are there sheltering and evacuation plans for the community and if so what are they?
  • Are the emergency contact numbers different for different situations?
  • Where can I find opportunities for preparedness education and/or training?
  • Does my community have a written plan?
  • Where can I find a copy of the community plan?
  • What is in the plan?
  • Are the plans updated often?
  • What are the important points of the plan that I should know?
  • Does the plan cover every hazard?
Besides your community’s plan, you will also want to find out what the plans are in places that you frequent such as your child’s school or daycare, your work, or places like shopping centers, sporting events, and places of worship.

You will also want to find out from your employer about the policies at your work regarding emergencies and disasters. Remember to include information on evacuation and shelter plans as well as how you will be given any emergency and warning information.

Make sure you know your child’s daycare or school disaster procedures.
