Disaster Recovery Assistance

As you're recovering from a disaster, it's going to be very important that you pay attention to local radio and television reports and monitor all sources of information about where to turn for first aid, temporary housing assistance, clothing, food, and financial assistance.

Groups That Can Provide Direct Assistance

Help to families or individuals can come from organizations such as: The above organizations can provide shelter, supplies, food and water, or clean-up assistance.

The Role of the Federal Government in Disaster Assistance

The federal government will also be called in to help in the most severe disaster. They will help individuals and families with counseling (post-disaster trauma), temporary housing, low-interest loans and grants, and other types of assistance. They also have programs for farmers and small businesses.

FEMA provides information through media sources and/or community outreach about the federal assistance that becomes available when the President of the United States declares a “Major Disaster” for the area as per the request of the state governor. They will give information on how to apply.

The following is a list of federal orgranizations and groups that provide grants and assistance programs for individuals that have been affected by a disaster.
  • Crisis Counseling - provides funding to states for short-term crisis counseling for victims of a disaster that has been declared by the President of the United States.

  • Disaster Assistance - provides individuals, families and businesses who have had property damaged by a disaster with direct monetary assistance when losses are not covered by private insurance.

  • Disaster Unemployment Assistance Program - provides re-employment services and unemployment benefits for those who have lost their employment due to a federally declaired disaster.

  • Disaster Legal Services - federally funded program that provides free legal assistance and service to victims of a disaster.

  • National Flood Insurance Programs - federally sponsored and funded program that enables property owners in parcipating regions to purchase flood insurance.

  • FEMA Grants - explore a directory of all federally funded grants that are available for preparing for and recovering from disasters.
