Additional Items for Basic Emergency Supplies Kit

The following are items that we recommend adding to your basic emergency kit:
  • Glasses and Prescription medications
  • Diapers and Infant formula
  • Food and water for your pet
  • Travelerís checks, cash, and change
  • You need to have copies of important documents such as insurance policies, i.d.ís, and bank records in a waterproof, portable container. You can use the Emergency Financial First Aid Kit (EFFAK) (PDF - 977Kb) developed by Operation Hope, FEMA and Citizen Corps to organize your information.
  • Warm blankets or a sleeping bag for each person. Additional bedding may be needed if you live in a cold climate.
  • Change of clothes including sturdy shoes, long pants, and a long sleeved shirt. Again, more clothing may be needed if you live in a cold climate.
  • Medicine dropper and chlorine bleach: one part bleach to nine parts water when diluted is useful as a disinfectant. You can also use it to treat water in an emergency by using 16 drops of liquid bleach for a gallon of water. Remember though not to use scented, color safe, or those with added cleaner.
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Matches kept in a waterproof container
  • Personal hygiene items and feminine supplies
  • Mess kits containing paper plates, cups, utensils, etc.
  • Pencil and paper
  • Activities for children such as books or puzzles
